Wayne Rooney's 78th minute volley sealed a smash and grab for Manchester United as they left Anfield with a 1-0 win.
Liverpool
were the 'dominant' force throughout the majority of the afternoon on
Merseyside but were unable to make the most of their chances during a
dull 90 minutes.
Rooney's powerful strike after Marouane Fellaini hit the crossbar
left Simon Mignolet with no chance and secured a vital three points for
the Red Devils in their ambition to finish in the top four.
In truth, the goal was a brief spark of excitement in an otherwise tepid affair in the northeast.
However, Liverpool will be ruing a number of missed chances and the
selection of David de Gea as man of the match said a lot about
Manchester United's performance.
